Red Cabbage with Prunes and Red Wine
If you're entertaining, Winexpert Burlington has this amazing side-dish recipe for you to present to your guests!
Red cabbage is not only beautiful in colour, but if cooked properly it's simply delicious! It's crunchy, tangy, and by adding prunes it gives the dish an amazingly "sweet & sour" taste.
If you're not big on prunes - or they affect your stomach, as they do with some people - you can replace the prunes with diced apples. Try this dish as a side for pork or chicken, or even yummy as a side dish for your turkey festivities!

What you'll need:

1/2 head of red cabbage, cut into shavings

1 large white onion, diced

3 garlic cloves

1 Cup finely chopped prunes (or substitute for gala apples)

1/2 Cup red wine (dry is best for this recipe)
-
2 Tbsp. vinegar (apple cider is best for this recipe)
-
1 Tbsp. brown sugar (ONLY if not using dates or apples!)
-
2 Tbsp. grapeseed or olive oil
-
a pinch of allspice
-
a pinch of nutmeg (optional)
-
sale & pepper to taste
Here's how to make it:
Heat the oil in a large frying pan at medium heat, then and add onions & garlic stirring until onions are translucent (do not burn the garlic as it will be grossly bitter!)
Add the cabbage and sauté until it's well-coated. Then add the prunes (or apples) and the red wine, mix well.
Turn heat to low, add the spices and flavourings and cover, cooking for an additional 5 to 10 minutes until softer but not gooey (unless you like gooey, then please go ahead!)
