If this warm wine recipe doesn't warm you up, nothing will! Winexpert Burlington loves mulled wine because it's just so tasty and warming... this recipe ROCKS - it's easy to make and tastes delicious.

Mulled wine is a beverage that dates back to the 2nd century in Rome. It's made with red wine along with various spices and sometimes raisins (optional). It's served hot – a crock pot works wonders if serving at a party – and best served in a glass rather than a mug (plus it looks prettier).

Ingredients
  • 1 bottle (750ml) of dry red wine
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds (leave skins on)
  • 1/4 cup of honey
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • sprinkle of nutmeg

Method
Combine all ingredients in a non-aluminum pan (or a crockpot on low) and bring to a simmer over medium heat (not a boil – you don't want to cook out the alcohol!).

Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the mixture simmer for at least 15 minutes, or up to 3 hours if serving at a party (it keeps longer, but again, the alcohol may evaporate).

Serve in short glasses with pieces of orange, lemons, cinnamon and star anise. You may also sprinkle some cinnamon on top for added flavour.
